Fire Guts Lagos Market After Gas Cylinder Explosion

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service swiftly responded to a fire outbreak at a market located in the Council Bus Stop area of Ikotun, Lagos.

The incident, reported on Saturday, resulted from a gas cylinder leak within the market.

Adeseye Magaret, the Director of the State Rescue Service, provided details of the incident, stating that the explosion was initiated by a gas cylinder leakage in one of the market shops.

The ensuing fire rapidly spread, affecting seven shops before the fire service operatives could arrive at the scene.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to a fire call today at 14:10 hrs when a fire erupted in a market at 2nd Junction, Governor’s Road Council Bus Stop, Ikotun, Lagos,” said Director Magaret.

“The incident was triggered by a gas cylinder leakage and subsequent explosion within one of the shops, rapidly spreading to neighbouring shops numbering seven, necessitating an immediate emergency response.”

Magaret noted that various state agencies, including the police, Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), were present at the scene to contain the incident.

“Preliminary investigations point to negligence during the refilling of a gas cylinder as the probable cause of the incident,” she added.
