KANO, Nigeria: Former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje publicly referred to Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, for the first time since removing him from the position in 2020.
Okay News reports that Ganduje acknowledged Sanusi during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, at the Government House.
During the event, the former governor greeted the monarch and formally recognised him as the Chairman of the Kano State Council of Emirs.
The Ganduje administration removed Sanusi from the throne in March 2020, citing insubordination.
Following the removal, the former Central Bank governor was replaced and relocated outside of the state.
The current governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, reinstated Sanusi to the position of Emir in 2024.
