Four Killed in Malawi VP’s Funeral Convoy Accident

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

A tragic accident occurred in Malawi during the funeral procession of late Vice President Saulos Chilima, who died in a plane crash earlier this week. A vehicle in the convoy rammed into a crowd of mourners in Ntcheu village, killing four people and injuring 12 others.

The incident happened as thousands of people lined up to catch a glimpse of the VP’s coffin. The vehicle, part of a motorcade transporting Chilima’s body to his home village for burial, plunged into the crowd after attempting to maneuver away from the dense crowd.

Police confirmed the deaths and injuries, and an eyewitness reported that the vehicle lost control as it tried to navigate through the volatile crowd. The funeral procession had been stopped earlier by mourners demanding to see the coffin, and some threw stones at the convoy.

Chilima’s party, the United Transformation Movement (UTM), has called for an investigation into the plane crash that killed him and eight others. President Lazarus Chakwera has also promised an independent inquiry into the accident.
