Several persons are feared dead and many others reportedly injured following an attack by suspected herdsmen in two villages in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna state.

The spokesman for the Kaduna State Government, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed the attack, describing it as inhuman and barbaric.

Aruwan also says more security operatives have been deployed to the affected areas to maintain law and order.

An indigene told Channels Television’s correspondent that the attack by the armed herdsmen occurred in Dangaji and Ungwan Gajere villages on Friday night and lasted till Saturday morning.

According to him, the armed bandits stormed the communities at night and opened fire on the helpless indigenes, shooting indiscriminately, and in the process killing about 10 people.

He also noted that the gunmen burnt down several houses as the villagers flew into neighbouring communities for safety.

The gunmen were said to have disappeared before military personnel rushed to the affected areas.

Birnin Gwari local government, a border town between Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina and Niger states, is reportedly notorious for kidnapping and cattle rustling.
