By Adamu Abubakar Isa

LONDON, United Kingdom — Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street on Tuesday as both leaders reviewed key areas of cooperation between Ghana and the United Kingdom, including trade, economic development, climate financing, and regional security.

The meeting brought together senior officials from both governments and focused on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries. Discussions also covered investment opportunities, efforts to support economic stability, and collaborative initiatives aimed at addressing challenges across West Africa.

Okay News reports that President Mahama was accompanied by a delegation that included Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Zita Sabah Benson.

According to diplomatic sources, the talks also touched on recent legislative developments in Ghana following the passage of a controversial bill by the country’s parliament concerning LGBTQ+ issues. The legislation, which is awaiting presidential assent, has attracted international attention and prompted reactions from governments, rights groups, and development partners.

British officials reportedly used the opportunity to discuss concerns surrounding the potential implications of the proposed law, including its impact on human rights perceptions, international partnerships, and foreign investment. The United Kingdom has consistently maintained its position against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Despite differences on certain policy matters, both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations and continuing cooperation on shared priorities. The meeting underscored the longstanding relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom, with both governments expressing commitment to expanding engagement in areas of mutual interest.
