By Adamu Abubakar Isa

GWAGWALADA, FCT – The Gwagwalada Area Council has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Speaker of its legislative arm, Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, and his aide, Ibrahim Ibwa, in a fatal motor accident.

Okay News reports that the accident occurred at Sheda village along the perennially busy Abuja-Lokoja highway on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. The victims were involved in a devastating head-on collision between their Mercedes-Benz car and a Sino truck at approximately 3:10 p.m.

According to sources within the council, the Speaker and his aides were returning to Gwagwalada from Kwali after attending a political meeting when the collision with the oncoming trailer occurred. While the Speaker’s aide died on the spot, Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa was rushed to Legend Hospital in Gwagwalada before being referred to the Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he passed away in the early hours of Thursday.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), who participated in the rescue operation, confirmed that a third passenger in the Mercedes-Benz survived the crash and is currently receiving medical attention. The remains of the Speaker were buried on Thursday according to Islamic rites in his home community of Ibwa, with several council officials and community leaders in attendance to pay their last respects.

The Abuja-Lokoja highway remains one of Nigeria’s most dangerous routes, frequently claiming lives due to head-on collisions and heavy truck traffic. This latest tragedy has sparked renewed calls for improved safety measures and the completion of dualization projects along critical stretches of the road near Sheda village.
