ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigerian Academy of Science will open Nigeria’s first dedicated science museum in Abuja on May 21, 2026.
Okay News reports that the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science, Professor Abubakar Sambo, and the Public Affairs Secretary, Professor Chinedum Babalola, announced the event in a statement released on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 12:37 pm WAT. The facility would provide a dynamic space for interactive exhibitions, scientific learning, and access to a wide range of educational resources.
The facility, which is named the NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, was funded and commissioned in 2025 by retired General Theophilus Danjuma. The academy stated that the center will serve students, researchers, and educators by fostering innovation and an appreciation for science in national development.
“The museum and library is expected to serve students, researchers, educators, and the public by fostering curiosity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for science and its role in national development,” the statement read. The facility will also play a role in strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education in Nigeria.
Bookings are currently open for school visits, organized group tours, and exhibitions. While there are permanent exhibits, the academy noted that specialized themed exhibitions will be organized on a regular basis. “While there are permanent exhibits, there will also be specialised themed exhibitions organised on a regular basis,” the statement read.
The opening program includes a public lecture by the Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Professor Kunle Odunsi, regarding cancer care and immunotherapy. Seven individuals will be inducted as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science during the event.
