The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced an extension to the deadline for the submission of memoranda concerning the creation of new states and local government areas. The new deadline is set for March 26, 2025.

This decision follows widespread public requests for additional time to refine and resubmit proposals, ensuring compliance with Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Earlier, the House Committee on Constitution Review reported receiving 31 proposals for new states. However, it was noted that none of these initial submissions met the required constitutional criteria.

Submission guidelines require three hard copies of memoranda to be delivered to the Committee Secretariat, Room H331, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, and soft copies to be emailed to [email protected].

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, stated that the extension aims to facilitate a constitutionally compliant process that addresses legitimate aspirations for state and local government creation. He emphasized the House’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring alignment with constitutional provisions.

This legislative action occurs alongside other ongoing discussions within the House, including proposals for a special levy on imported finished goods and the pursuit of outstanding financial obligations.
