IGP Disu Visits Zamfara, Joins Funeral Prayers for Slain Officers Amid Anti-Banditry Push

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

GUSAU, Nigeria — The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid a high-profile operational visit to Zamfara State on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, to honor three police officers killed in the line of duty and reinforce the federal offensive against banditry in the frontline state.

The police chief arrived in Gusau, the state capital, to participate in the solemn Islamic funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) alongside state officials, grieving families, and hundreds of local residents.

Okay News reports that the IGP was received by senior regional stakeholders, including the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Mallam Abubakar M. Nakwada, who represented Governor Dauda Lawal during the funeral proceedings. The working visit highlights intense security coordination across the Northwest corridor, arriving just days after the National Assembly fast-tracked landmark constitutional changes to decentralize local law enforcement structures.

Addressing a packed assembly of officers and men at the Zamfara State Police Command headquarters, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu paid a glowing tribute to the fallen personnel, describing them as exceptionally courageous patriots who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend the state from terror. “While the loss is deeply painful, it will only strengthen the resolve of the Nigeria Police Force to sustain ongoing operations against banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes,” Disu asserted, promising that the families of the deceased would receive comprehensive administrative and welfare backing.

The Inspector-General highly commended the state command for its recent operational breakthroughs, which include the successful neutralization of armed bandits, the rescue of multiple kidnapped victims, the interception of dangerous explosives, and the recovery of logistics materials used by terror cells. Emphasizing that the greatest tribute to the fallen officers is the unyielding pursuit of justice, the IGP charged the command to scale up intelligence-led community policing and robust inter-agency collaborations to permanently restore peace to the troubled state.
