Pochettino

The Tottenham boss bemoans lack of clinical finishing after defeat to Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham deserved more after watching his side lose 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs took the lead against Antonio Conte’s team thanks to Christian Eriksen’s stunning strike before two quick-fire goals from Chelsea either side of half time changed the outlook of the game.

The result continues the north London club’s unwanted 16-year winless streak at Stamford Bridge, as well as suffering their first league defeat of the season.

But Pochettino felt his side deserved more from a game he felt they dominated.

“I’m frustrated because we did a lot of good things in the first half and it ends 1-1, it was tough to accept that,” Pochettino told talkSPORT.

“The second half was very competitive; we had the possibility to come back into the game. But as always in football , you need to be clinical in front of the goal and defend well. It is a game that is too difficult to explain why we lost because we played so well and I think we deserved more.”

Pochettino’s team looked relatively comfortable heading towards half time as they attempted to hold out on their 1-0 lead. But Pedro’s impressive strike just before the interval changed the momentum of the game in Chelsea’s favour.

And the Spurs boss was proud of his team’s efforts despite suffering another loss in what has been a disappointing week, following the club’s exit from the Champions League .

“We dominated the first half and we created the best chances in the game. But we conceded a goal and that disappointed us, because it was difficult to accept. But I think the mentality of the team is to always look forward and to play in the opposition’s half.

“To have more possession, more shots and to create the best chances at Chelsea, it’s a good point to say: ok, we are in a good way. But we were unbeaten in 12 games and we have to take the positives for the future.”
