Abuja, NIGERIA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a one-week adjustment to the Osun State Governorship Election, moving the poll from August 8 to August 15, 2026.
Okay News gathered that the adjustment is a “consequential” follow-up to the revised 2027 General Election timetable released earlier this year. According to a statement signed on Thursday, April 16, 2026, by National Commissioner Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the shift ensures that all electoral preparations align with the newly established national schedule.
As a result of this change, the deadline for all political campaigns in Osun State has also been moved. In accordance with Section 98(1) of the **Electoral Act 2026**, which mandates that all public canvassing must end 24 hours before election day, political parties and candidates must now conclude their campaigns by midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The Commission, currently under the leadership of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, has urged all stakeholders and political actors to strictly follow the new timeline to avoid legal repercussions. This adjustment comes as INEC continues to fine-tune the calendar for upcoming off-cycle elections, including the Ekiti governorship poll scheduled for June 20, 2026, ahead of the next major national contest in early 2027.
With the Osun election now moved to August 15, the political atmosphere in the state is already heating up.
