TEHRAN, Iran: Chief negotiator Mohammad Ghalibaf stated on Sunday, May 31, 2026, that the government will not agree to any deal with the United States that fails to secure the rights of Iranians.
Okay News reports that Ghalibaf outlined the position during a video broadcast on state television. “We will not approve any agreement until we are certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been upheld,” Ghalibaf said.
During the broadcast, Ghalibaf added that the negotiators “neither trust the enemy’s words nor its promises.”
The statements arrive as representatives from Tehran and Washington exchange proposals over a framework to end the war in the Middle East that broke out on February 28.
On Saturday, The New York Times and Axios reported that US President Donald Trump returned a new framework to the Iranian government containing “tougher” terms.
The Iranian administration views sanction relief and the release of assets frozen in foreign banks as required rights under any agreement. Authorities have also maintained tight control over the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict began and consider oversight of shipping through the waterway as an established right.
