Kano Shari’a Court Orders Mental Evaluation for Tiktoker, Murja Kunya

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

A Shari’a court in Kano has issued an order for the popular Tiktoker, Murja Kunya, to undergo a mental evaluation at a government hospital.

The decision was delivered by Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, the judge presiding over the case, during a ruling on Tuesday.

Murja Kunya, a resident of Tishama Hotoro Quarters in Kano, was arrested at her residence on February 12 and subsequently arraigned on a three-count charge. The charges include inciting public disturbance, belonging to a criminal gang, and criminal intimidation.

In his ruling, Judge Yusuf-Ahmad directed that the Tiktoker be taken to a public hospital to assess her mental health, citing concerns about possible drug influence.

He emphasized that the defendant would remain in the custody of the Kano state Hisbah Board, and the board would provide the court with updates on her condition.

“The defendant’s previous appearance shows she is allegedly not in a sound state of mind due to suspected drug influence. Hisbah board should be updating the court from time to time on her well-being for three months,” the judge declared.

The matter has been adjourned to May 20 for the continuation of the case.

During the court proceedings, Aminu Abdullahi, the prosecution counsel, informed the court that members of the community where Murja Kunya resides had complained about her influence on their children, allegedly leading them into prostitution.

“You even said it in one of your videos which went viral that you are the leader of all the prostitutes in the city,” Abdullahi said.

The charges brought against the Tiktoker are said to contravene sections 341, 275, and 227 of the Penal Code.

Despite the allegations, Murja Kunya pleaded not guilty to the charges.
