Umuahia, Abia State, NIGERIA — The Labour Party (LP) has successfully concluded its National Elective Convention, electing the immediate past National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, as the substantive National Chairman. The convention, held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, marks a significant turning point for the party following years of internal leadership disputes.
Alongside Senator Usman, Hon. Iheanacho Obioma was elected as the National Secretary, with 32 other officials inaugurated into various National Working Committee (NWC) positions. Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, who hosted the event, described the transition as “rancour-free” and a testament to the party’s new-found unity.
Okay News reports that the convention also passed a decisive motion declaring the 2024 Nnewi Convention “null and void,” effectively erasing the legacy of the previous leadership.
A Mandate for Reconciliation and Digital Registration
In his address to the delegates, Governor Otti emphasized that the party’s primary objective must now be “reconciliation and integration.” He charged the new leadership to reach out to aggrieved members and ensure that “nobody is left behind” as the party prepares for the 2027 General Elections. The Governor also highlighted the urgency of the ongoing online electronic party registration, urging the NWC to collaborate with NIMC to resolve NIN-related bottlenecks for prospective members.
The convention was observed by a team from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Prof. Sani Adams, lending institutional legitimacy to the proceedings. Senator Nenadi Usman, in her acceptance speech, thanked the delegates for their confidence and promised a transparent leadership style. With the May 30, 2026, primary deadline approaching, the Labour Party now shifts its focus to conducting “free and fair” primaries across all constituencies to solidify its “Rising for Victory” theme.
