A monkey was detained by health officials after biting a hospital employee in a parking lot, police in North Carolina said.

The bite occurred on Wednesday afternoon at the Carolinas Medical Center-University, after officers were called about a report of the lost monkey named Carter in the parking.

The small monkey escaped from a car in the parking lot. The monkey never entered the hospital. It was apprehended by a maintenance worker and placed in a container.

According to the Department of Health, the employee and Carter are being tested for Herpes B.

Health Department officials said that Herpes B is natural in some monkeys, but the virus can be deadly to humans if left untreated.

The monkey underwent a blood test and will have another test in 14 days and another 21 days. Carter will remain in quarantine for 30 days.

The employee is going through the same blood tests. If the worker contracted Herpes B, he will be treated. The hospital employee is also being treated for rabies.
