Manchester City booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a composed 2–0 victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho.
Pep Guardiola rang the changes for the quarter-final, leaving out several regular starters, but City still controlled possession for long spells.
The Citizens were finally rewarded in the 32nd minute when Cherki collected the ball on the edge of the area and bent a superb strike into the top corner, giving the hosts a deserved lead. Brentford struggled to respond and offered little attacking threat before the break.
Any hopes of a comeback were effectively ended midway through the second half when Savinho’s effort took a deflection and looped over the goalkeeper to double City’s advantage. The champions then managed the game comfortably to secure progression to the last four, keeping alive their bid for another League Cup win.
