Microsoft has made a strategic move by hiring former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman.

This decision follows Altman’s departure from OpenAI on Friday due to a loss of confidence from the board in his leadership abilities.

After a weekend of negotiations, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that both Altman and Brockman would be leading Microsoft’s new advanced AI research team.

“We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team,” stated Nadella.

“We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman confirmed his move to Microsoft, quoting Nadella’s statement, “the mission continues.”

Nadella provided insights into how he envisions Altman’s role at Microsoft, saying, “We’ve learned a lot over the years about how to give founders and innovators space to build independent identities and cultures within Microsoft, including GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I’m looking forward to having you do the same.”

We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett…

Altman’s transition to Microsoft occurred just hours after negotiations with OpenAI’s board failed to bring him back as the CEO of OpenAI.
