Monogamy Is Not Working – Okey Bakassi Says Polygamy Best Marriage Model for Africa

By Damilola A.

Nigerian comedian and actor Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, widely known as Okey Bakassi, has stirred conversations with his advocacy for polygamy as the most suitable form of marriage for Africans.

The entertainer shared his views during an appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, where he expressed skepticism about the success of monogamy on the continent.

Bakassi argued that many people in monogamous relationships are not genuinely content, claiming that societal pressures often force individuals to maintain appearances rather than confront the challenges of monogamy.

“Forget all the lip services that we pay to polygamy here. I still think that polygamy is the best form of marriage for Africa. Monogamy is not working,” Bakassi said.

He questioned the rationale behind monogamy, comparing it to the more flexible approach offered by polygamy.

“Now, what’s the difference between polygamy and monogamy? Polygamy says you can marry two people at the same time. Monogamy says you cannot marry them at the same time, you have to let one go. What if you don’t want to let one go?” he added.
