Mustapha Gubio Emerges Unopposed as Borno APC Governorship Candidate

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – In a highly coordinated show of party unity, the immediate past Borno State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, has emerged unopposed as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.

Okay News reports that the confirmation took place during the party’s gubernatorial primary election on Thursday, May 21, 2026, in Maiduguri. The high-stakes internal election drew the nation’s top political figures, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima and the incumbent Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum.

Gubio’s path to the ticket was cleared after he secured the explicit endorsement of Governor Zulum late last month and formally presented his nomination forms at the Government House. Standing unopposed, his affirmation by party delegates went smoothly under tight security. Speaking immediately after his victory, the newly minted flagbearer expressed deep gratitude to the state’s leadership and promised to drive massive infrastructural development, pledging to lead with the fear of God if elected in the general polls next year.

Addressing the gathered stakeholders, Vice President Shettima urged all members to bury old grudges and unite to ensure total victory for the ruling party. He emphasized that the smooth primary selection forms a core part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which relies on credible leadership to deliver economic growth and regional security. Following the conclusion of the peaceful exercise, the Vice President departed the state capital for Abuja alongside a powerful delegation of political heavyweights, including Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Bukar Dalori, Senator Tahir Monguno, and Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan.
