Nationwide Blackout Grips Nigeria Again as National Grid Collapses

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

Nigeria is once again plunged into darkness as a nationwide blackout grips the country following a collapse of the national grid.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the outage in a statement posted on its official X account, attributing the power failure to a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours on Sunday.

“The Management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) wishes to inform its valued customers that the power outage being experienced is as a result of a system failure from the national grid at 11:21 hours today, 4th February, 2024, which has led to a nationwide power outage,” the statement read.

Assuring customers of their efforts to rectify the situation, the AEDC stated, “Be rest assured that we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized.”

The latest grid collapse adds to the challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector, which has been plagued by recurrent power outages and supply constraints in recent times.

Just last year, Nigerians experienced at least three nationwide blackouts on September 14, 19, and December 11.
