NERC Announces Hike In Electricity Tariff for Band A Consumers

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved the rise in electricity rates for customers in the Band A category.

Addressing reporters at a press briefing held in Abuja on Wednesday, Musliu Oseni, the Vice Chairman of NERC, announced the tariff hike, revealing that customers in Band A will now be required to pay N225 per kilowatt-hour, a substantial increase from the previous rate of N66.

Oseni explained, “We currently have 800 feeders categorized as Band A, but it will now be reduced to under 500. This means that 17 percent now qualify as Band A feeders, servicing only 15 percent of total electricity customers connected to the feeders.”

He further disclosed that NERC has issued an order titled “April Supplementary Order,” allowing for a rate adjustment to 235 kilowatt-hours.

Importantly, Oseni clarified that the tariff review will solely impact customers classified under Band A, with no changes affecting customers in other bands.
