Tegbe Denies Promise to Fix Nigerian Power Grid in Three Months

ABUJA, NigeriaNigeria’s Minister-designate for Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, denied reports on Thursday, May 7, 2026, claiming he committed to fixing the national electricity grid within three months.

Adeola Adelabu, the spokesperson for the minister-designate, issued a statement describing the reports as a misrepresentation of remarks made during a Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

Okay News reports that Adeola Adelabu stated the timelines for reforms in the power sector are currently being developed and remain subject to diagnostics and consultations with stakeholders. The spokesperson said the claim was a clear misrepresentation and that Tegbe made no such commitment to the Senate.

According to the statement, Tegbe informed the Senate that initial efforts to stabilise the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office. He noted that broader structural reforms to the power sector could require approximately one year to implement.

Proposed reforms will focus on sector credibility, gas supply challenges, and the expansion of electricity metering. On the subject of electricity tariffs, the minister-designate said that reforms would protect vulnerable consumers while ensuring sustainability and investor confidence.

“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” Tegbe said during the screening. He pledged to modernise electricity infrastructure, improve commercial frameworks, and enforce accountability across the power value chain.

Nigeria’s Presidency recently nominated Tegbe to replace the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, following a cabinet reshuffle. Tegbe is an engineer and public policy expert.
