NERC Issues Permits for Off-Grid Electricity Generation to MTN, Others

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has granted permits to several companies, including MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, to generate electricity through off-grid and mini-grid systems. The move aims to increase power supply and promote renewable energy in the country.

According to the NERC report, nine new off-grid generation licenses were issued in the first quarter of 2024, with a total capacity of 109.69 megawatts. Golden Penny Power Limited received a license to build six off-grid gas plants across four states, with a total capacity of 100MW. MTN was granted a permit to build four captive generation plants in Lagos State, with a capacity of 15.94MW.

Other companies, including SweetCo Foods Limited and African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, were also permitted to generate captive power. The NERC issued three new trading licenses and certified six Meter Service Providers during the same period.

The commission encourages the development and utilization of renewable energy by issuing permits and registration certificates for mini-grid development. This initiative aims to increase electricity supply and reduce reliance on the national grid.
