Nigeria Road Safety Corps Confirms Cause of Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident involving world-renowned heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, in southwest Nigeria.

Okay News reports that the crash occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, Ogun State, one of the busiest transport corridors in the country linking Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, to the rest of the southwest.

In a statement issued and signed by Olusegun Ogungbemide, FRSC spokesperson, said preliminary findings released by the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, the accident happened at about 12:00 noon and involved a black Lexus Jeep conveying Anthony Joshua and a stationary red commercial Sinotruck parked by the roadside. The Lexus Jeep reportedly collided with the truck during an overtaking manoeuvre.

FRSC operatives were said to have arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving the distress call, enabling swift rescue operations, traffic management, and prevention of secondary crashes.

A total of five adult males were involved in the incident. Two persons lost their lives at the scene, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and reportedly sustained minor injuries.

The injured victim was immediately evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was also notified to carry out further investigation and documentation.

Explaining the circumstances surrounding the crash, the FRSC stated that preliminary investigations pointed to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as the primary causes.

“The Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well parked by the side of the road,” the Corps said, noting that “excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery.

“On behalf of the entire Management and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery,” he said.

The FRSC renewed its call on motorists to strictly observe traffic regulations, particularly on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Drivers were urged to avoid dangerous overtaking, excessive speed, and impatience, especially during the festive travel season.
