ABUJA, Nigeria: The Federal Government of Nigeria summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner on Saturday, May 2, 2026, following reported attacks and anti-foreigner protests targeting Nigerians and their businesses.
Okay News reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria scheduled a meeting with the envoy for Monday, May 4, 2026, at its headquarters.
Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the ministry, issued a statement detailing the purpose of the meeting. The engagement is intended to formally communicate the government’s “profound concern” regarding the recent demonstrations and “documented instances of mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.”
The ministry acknowledged the public reaction to the events in a formal statement. “The Ministry is aware of the growing discontent among Nigerians concerning the treatment of their nationals in South Africa. Nevertheless, it implores the Nigerian public to remain calm,” Ebienfa said.
The government stated it is committed to safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerians living abroad.
