LAGOS, Nigeria. Nigeria’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund denied circulating claims that it suspended its student loan disbursement programme on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 2:34 PM WAT.
Okay News reports that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund issued a statement on the social media platform X to clarify that no pause in disbursements had been announced and advised the public to rely on official channels.
The agency addressed an unverified document circulating online that claimed the programme was halted. The fraudulent notice said, “due to unforeseen operational circumstances… NELFUND has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause the student loan disbursement programme with immediate effect.”
In response, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund dismissed the claims entirely. The agency said, “This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive.”
The Federal Government of Nigeria reported that the loan scheme has reached over one million students since its inception. The government said that the intervention has cost over N1.1 billion ($846,000 USD).
More than 160,000 youths have received digital skills training through related government initiatives.
