The upper house of the National Assembly of Nigeria today, November 10, rejected the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) budget on the ground of ambiguous capital projects reoccurrence.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, reacting to the report presented by the Senate committee on Finance, stated concerns about the absolute agreement by the Committee with the recommendations of the agency, noting that thorough oversights were not carried out.

Saraki remarked: “Capital projects that are ambiguous keep reoccurring in the Budget. We must ensure that these projects are carefully examined.”

“As part of our oversight function, we must check the correctness of figures and ensure thorough investigation at all times,” he further maintained.

Unanimously, all senators agreed with the President, moving that the alleged budget should be rejected.

It will be recalled that the leadership of the Senate has promised Nigerians, in light of the budget controversy of 2016, that it will no longer be business as usual when it comes to issues of budget.
