Nigeria’s House of Representatives to Vote on State Police Bill on Thursday

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ABUJA, Nigeria — The House of Representatives is expected to take a major step in Nigeria’s constitutional reform process on Thursday as lawmakers prepare to vote on a proposal seeking the establishment of state police across the country.

Okay News reports that Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Constitution Review, announced the development during a media briefing shortly after plenary.

Kalu said the House had resolved to prioritise consideration of the state police proposal ahead of other constitutional amendment bills. According to him, the measure is among the key reforms being considered as part of ongoing efforts to review Nigeria’s constitutional framework.

The Deputy Speaker disclosed that lawmakers currently away from Abuja on oversight assignments have been directed to suspend their activities and return to the National Assembly ahead of Thursday’s voting session.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Kalu and 14 other members of the House, seeks to amend the Constitution to allow the creation of state-controlled police forces alongside the existing federal policing structure.

Supporters of the proposal argue that decentralised policing could improve security by enabling state governments to respond more effectively to local threats and criminal activities. However, the idea has also generated debate over concerns about potential political interference and the need for safeguards to prevent abuse.

The outcome of Thursday’s vote is expected to be closely watched, as it could shape the future of policing and security administration in Nigeria.
