Abuja, FCT, NIGERIA — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the immediate dismissal and subsequent prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mene Ogidi.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, follows an expedited review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The FDC’s findings established that ASP Usman acted in “gross violation” of Force Order 237, which strictly regulates the use of firearms by Nigeria Police Force personnel. The investigation concluded that the shooting, which occurred in Effurun, Delta State on April 26, was an unlawful and unprofessional betrayal of the police oath to protect life.
Okay News reports that the recommendations for dismissal have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final ratification before the officers are handed over to judicial authorities for criminal prosecution.
DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Force Public Relations Officer, emphasized that the IGP maintains a zero-tolerance stance on the abuse of power. The statement served as a stern reminder to the rank and file that “no uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.” The IGP extended his deepest condolences to the family of Mene Ogidi, assuring them that the Force is committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served to reinforce institutional accountability.
This rapid disciplinary action comes amid heightened public scrutiny following several reported cases of police misconduct across Nigeria this week, including the alleged killing of Sani Salisu Basaura in Ibadan.
