GENEVA, Switzerland — The Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been honored as the inaugural recipient of the WE Empower Trailblazer Award for Lifetime Achievement, recognizing her decades-long commitment to women’s empowerment.

The global economic leader received the recognition on Thursday, June 18, 2026, during an official presentation ceremony highlighting female leadership in international sustainable development.

Okay News reports that the award is a core element of the WE Empower UN SDG Challenge Initiative, an international enterprise co-convened by the Arizona State University (ASU) Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and the Vital Voices Global Partnership. The initiative recognizes innovative female executives and entrepreneurs who are actively driving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through impactful regional and global policies.

The presentation event was hosted by Amanda Ellis, Executive Director of the ASU Global Institute of Sustainability and Innovation, alongside Patricia McCullagh, Canada’s Deputy Permanent Representative. In a lighthearted detail shared by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, she was uniquely presented with a customized Swiss Army Knife to symbolize her celebrated career ability to “cut through crap and get to the point.” The high-level gathering featured prominent diplomatic attendance, including International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary-General Martin Chungong, who turned out to support the veteran Nigerian diplomat’s latest international milestone.
