ILORIN, Nigeria — The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed widespread reports claiming that bandits invaded the Government Girls Secondary School in Oke-Oyi, labeling the incident a false alarm that caused unnecessary public panic.
The official clarification was issued on Thursday afternoon, June 18, 2026, following a security sweep of the area by emergency response teams.
Okay News reports that commotion erupted around the school premises at approximately 9:15 a.m. after an unidentified woman rushed into the compound claiming heavily armed bandits were approaching the community. The unverified claim triggered immediate panic among students, teachers, and neighboring residents, leading to a temporary disruption of academic activities before the Oke-Oyi Divisional Police Officer mobilized tactical personnel to secure the perimeter.
State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that an exhaustive preliminary investigation proved there was no security breach, bandit sighting, or threat within Oke-Oyi or any nearby communities. Reacting to the development, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, strongly condemned the spread of fake security alerts and confirmed that detectives have launched a manhunt for the purveyor of the false alarm. Adekimi warned that the individual will face full prosecution for generating public disorder, urging residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and verify sensitive security information through official channels.
