Prof Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked Nigerians to disregard rumours in some quarters that the mission of the party’s presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari is to Islamise Nigeria, if he wins the February elections.

Speaking at a town hall meeting yesterday at Ikosi-Ketu area of Lagos, Osinbajo described the rumours as mere propaganda.

The RCCG pastor pointed out that Buhari’s cook of 25 years and his driver are Christians, adding that while he was a Military Head of State, almost 70 percent of his cabinet were Christians and he never made attempts to Islamise them, Leadership reports.

Osinbajo said: “Let me explain one thing to you, it is not possible to Islamise Nigeria. It is not possible to Christianise Nigeria. Nigeria has a constitution which states clearly that there cannot be a state religion in the country.

“It is the duty of government to ensure that every Nigerian is able to worship in whatever way he wants to worship and at anywhere he desires. Buhari’s administration will ensure that if you are a Christian, you are able to worship freely wherever you want to worship.

“If you are a Muslim, you will worship wherever you want to worship. His business as the president of the country is to provide security for your life and security for your property. Nobody can burn a church, nobody can burn a Mosque and go scot-free. Such a person must be punished.”

He disclosed that while Buhari was a military president, he was approached to join Islamic state but he refused.

Buhari was a military president at the time and could do if he liked then. When he did not do it at the time, how can you say now that he would do it in the civilian administration? All that is just PDP propaganda,” he said.

There have been fears that Buhari would islamise Nigeria if he wins the February 14 presidential elections.

The APC has however dismissed such insinuations saying it is impossible for Buhari, to turn Nigeria into an Islamic nation if he becomes the country’s president.
