Oyo Declares Public Holiday for Islamic New Year

The Oyo State Government has announced a public holiday on Monday, July 8, 2024, to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1446AH. This declaration was made in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, to honor the significant occasion of Hijrah in the lives of Muslim residents.

The government urged residents to use the day to reflect on the teachings of Hijrah, pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in the state and nation, and come together in the spirit of solidarity and brotherhood.

The holiday is a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, acknowledging the importance of Hijrah, which marks Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD.
