Oyo Teachers Protest Abduction of 47 Students and Colleagues

IBADAN, Nigeria: Teachers in Oyo State suspended academic activities across public schools on Monday, June 1, 2026, to protest the abduction of students and educators.

Okay News reports that the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Teachers directed members to demonstrate over the kidnapping of 47 individuals from schools in the Ahoro Esiele community of the Oriire Local Government Area.

Public schools across the 11 local government areas of Ibadanland locked their gates and turned away arriving students in areas including Molete, Orita Challenge, New Garage, and Odo Ona. Administrators granted access only to Senior Secondary School Three students who were sitting for their terminal examinations.

An anonymous teacher said the abducted individuals have remained in captivity for more than two weeks. “We cannot begin to imagine the pain, fear and trauma that the kidnapped students and their teachers have endured over the past 18 days,” the teacher said. “Our appeal is to both the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to intensify efforts and take urgent action to secure their safe and unconditional release.”

Civil society organisations and local residents supported the protest to demand the implementation of stronger security measures for educational institutions.
