LONDON, United Kingdom — Six people were stabbed and 24 others arrested following Arsenal’s Premier League victory parade in north London, police said on Monday, after hundreds of thousands of fans gathered to celebrate the club’s league triumph.
Authorities said most of those injured in the stabbings sustained non-life-threatening wounds. However, a man in his 20s was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being attacked on Hornsey Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police later confirmed that his condition had stabilised.
Okay News reports that more than 500 police officers were deployed for the five-mile parade route as massive crowds filled the streets to celebrate Arsenal’s first Premier League title in more than two decades.
The Metropolitan Police said the 24 arrests included 10 people suspected of assaulting police officers, three arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, and one person detained over an alleged grievous bodily harm incident that left a victim with a head injury. Two officers were also injured during the celebrations, with one suffering a slash wound to the hand and another struck on the head by objects thrown from the crowd.
