BENIN CITY, Nigeria – The Edo State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday evening near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) main campus gate in Ugbowo.
Okay News reports that the incident, which took place at approximately 5:00 PM on May 10, involved an attack on three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK. Preliminary findings indicate that an unidentified white GLK intercepted the victims’ vehicle as they were driving out of the university. The assailants reportedly lowered their windows and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The victims, identified as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu, sustained varying degrees of gunshot wounds. A female passerby, Dorathy Ubah, was also caught in the crossfire and injured. Police operatives mobilized swiftly to the scene, transporting the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for emergency care. Tragically, Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead upon arrival, while the other victims remain under medical supervision.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, has condemned the attack and ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators. The Command issued a stern warning to criminal elements operating within the state and university environments, reaffirming its resolve to eliminate hoodlums and ensure the safety of students and residents alike.
While investigations are ongoing, the police have appealed to the public for credible information that could lead to the arrest of the gunmen. Residents are encouraged to contact the Command through its emergency lines, with assurances that all provided information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality as authorities work to bring the killers to justice.
