Premier League clubs will decide next month whether to eliminate the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) starting from the next season.

This critical vote is set to take place at the annual general meeting in Harrogate on June 6, following a formal resolution submitted by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves, the club initiating this proposal, expressed that while VAR was introduced “in good faith” to assist on-field officials with crucial match decisions, it has instead resulted in “numerous unintended negative consequences that are damaging the relationship between fans and football.”

Since its introduction in 2019, VAR has been a source of continuous debate and controversy, with several high-profile incidents this season amplifying criticisms of the technology. Wolves’ statement emphasized that “the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game.”

The Premier League has acknowledged the growing concerns surrounding VAR but reiterated its support for the technology. In a statement, the league affirmed its commitment to working with the referees’ body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), to address issues and enhance the system.

“Any rule changes need a two-thirds majority – 14 out of the 20 clubs – to vote in favor,” the Premier League noted.

Adding to the context of technological advancements in officiating, Premier League clubs have already approved the introduction of semi-automated offside technology for the 2024-25 season.
