Presidential Villa, Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday called on state governors to prioritise the poor and underprivileged, urging them to design policies that directly benefit grassroots communities across Nigeria. This was contained in a statement by Bayo Onaonuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Speaking during an interfaith breaking of fast with governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President said the coincidence of Ramadan and Lent this year highlights shared values of discipline, sacrifice and compassion among Muslims and Christians.
He said the dual religious observances offer leaders an opportunity to reflect on the plight of ordinary Nigerians and intensify efforts to reduce poverty and empower young people.
“Tolerate everybody and build structure in this period of faith, unity, harmony and sacrifice,” the President said, adding that development and compassion must transcend religion, tribe and status.
Tinubu welcomed several governors to the State House, including Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, and commended Babagana Zulum of Borno State for his Ramadan outreach to both Muslims and Christians. He also referenced Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State in highlighting agricultural progress.
The President expressed optimism about the country’s economic outlook, stating that Nigeria was emerging from a period of uncertainty. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling unemployment and insecurity, announcing plans to establish state police as part of broader security reforms.
“Security is the foundation of prosperity,” Tinubu said. “We will establish state police to curb insecurity. This is not about politics; it is about practicality.”
Representing the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma praised the President’s efforts to foster unity amid religious and ethnic differences. He described the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent as a rare and divinely inspired moment for national reflection and cooperation.
Uzodimma also commended Tinubu for strengthening collaboration between the federal and state governments, noting that the period of fasting calls for greater support for the less privileged.
The President concluded by reiterating his determination to “rescue the country,” emphasising that inclusive development and unity among leaders remain essential to delivering lasting progress for Nigerians.
