Senate Rejects State Of Emergency In Zamfara State

By Farouk Mohammed

The Senate on Tuesday rejected a motion by Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC-Zamfara Central) seeking the declaration of a state of emergency in Zamfara state.

The senator had prayed the Senate to declare a state of emergency in the state due to the incessant killings by armed bandits in Zamfara communities.

Marafa also requested an investigation into claims by the state governor, Abdulaziz Yari, that security agencies were alerted to an impending attack in the area 24 hours before the killings.

The Senate resolved to urge the federal government to direct the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to use aerial surveillance to identify the location of the armed bandits and arrest them.

It also urged the federal government to mount diplomatic pressure on the Niger Republic and Chad to stop criminal elements from using their territories to launch attacks on Nigeria.
