Abuja, NIGERIA – Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to addressing the humanitarian challenges facing the country through deepened collaboration with international development partners.
Speaking on Tuesday, during a visit from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Vice President emphasized that constant engagement is the only way to resolve “grey areas” in Nigeria’s humanitarian response framework.
A key outcome of the meeting was the Federal Government’s warm reception of the ICRC’s proposal to establish a national humanitarian response mechanism. This framework is specifically designed to manage the plight of victims of armed conflict. VP Shettima noted that the government is fully willing to collaborate to operationalize this mechanism, ensuring that Nigeria’s security forces—which he termed among the most professional globally—continue to act in line with international standards.
Okay News reports that the ICRC delegation, led by Ms. Doris El Doueihy, lauded Nigeria for domesticating the Kampala Convention for internally displaced persons, describing the nation as a model for the continent.
The partnership between Nigeria and the ICRC spans critical sectors, including healthcare, water supply, and specialized training for security personnel. The President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga, was also present to witness the deepening of these diplomatic and humanitarian ties.
