Maiduguri, NIGERIA – A wave of grief and national pride swept through the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, as the Nigerian Army laid to rest Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah, Captain Azubuike Michael Esimai, and several other soldiers killed in recent counter-terrorism operations.
Okay News gathered that the fallen heroes were accorded full military honours, including a 21-gun salute, in a ceremony attended by the top echelons of Nigeria’s security and political leadership. Brigadier General Braimah, a highly respected officer, lost his life during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Benisheikh axis of Borno State earlier this month.
The burial was attended by the Executive Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, alongside the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), and the Chief of Army Staff. In his tribute, Governor Zulum described the fallen soldiers as “true patriots” whose sacrifice ensured the continued stability of the Northeast region. He emphasized that while the loss is heavy, the courage displayed by the officers would remain a source of inspiration for the nation.
The Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff also spoke at the graveside, offering prayers for the families of the deceased. They reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to providing the Armed Forces with the necessary tools to end the insurgency, noting that the deaths of such high-ranking and dedicated officers would not be in vain.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of national flags and service citations to the next of kin, a somber moment that highlighted the deep human cost of the ongoing security efforts in Northern Nigeria.
