Sowore Falls After Teargas Fired at Abuja Protest

ABUJA, Nigeria: Activist and African Action Congress 2027 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore fell outside the Force Headquarters on Friday, June 12, 2026, after security operatives fired teargas to disperse a Democracy Day protest.

Okay News reports that user ChuksEricE shared footage on X showing the candidate lying on the ground as demonstrators fanned him with placards.

The demonstration in Abuja was part of a nationwide mobilization declared over economic and living conditions. A joint statement announcing the action was signed by human rights lawyer Femi Falana, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights President Yinka Folarin, #EndBadGovernance Movement organizer Hassan Soweto, and Falz.

“Them don start. Police are already shooting. Sowore don faint ohh. Nigeria police,” protesters said.

As the crowd disorganized, individuals recorded the ongoing deployment of chemical irritants.

“They are still shooting more tear gas,” a woman said.

Demonstrators helped the candidate into a vehicle where he covered his nose with a red handkerchief. When asked if he was stable before the vehicle drove away, the candidate said, “Yeah.”

Security agencies have not released an official statement regarding the incident as of 3:18 p.m. WAT (GMT+1).
