Spotify Unveils Playlist Cover Art Feature with a Star-Studded Event in Lagos

By Okay News

A new year calls for new goals, fresh ideas, and, of course, an updated playlist that radiates “main character energy.”

Spotify is stepping up its game by introducing an exciting playlist cover art feature that allows users to take their playlists to the next level.

With this tool, both Free and Premium Spotify users can unleash their creativity to personalise playlist aesthetics like never before.

From striking images and vibrant colours to custom text effects and graphics, the new feature is designed to let users tell their stories visually.

“This feature is another fun way we are celebrating users; giving them more creative freedom over their playlist aesthetic, making their soundtracks feel authentic to their lives,” says Miche Atagana, Spotify’s Head of Communications and PR in Sub-Saharan Africa.

To showcase the potential of this feature, Spotify hosted an exclusive soiree at The Waterside in Lekki, Lagos, on Wednesday, 29th January 2025. The event brought together Spotify users, influencers, and media personalities to experience the magic of custom playlist creation firsthand.

Hosted by the vibrant podcaster Taymesan, the night was a mix of storytelling, laughter, dancing, and connection. Guests indulged in creative activities, including designing unique playlist covers and capturing fun moments at life-sized photo booths. Many discovered new friendships through their shared love of music and storytelling.

“Playlists are how Spotify users tell their story and all the emotions they feel. With over 8 billion playlists now live on the platform, this feature allows them to personalise their soundtracks in a way that feels uniquely theirs,” Atagana added.

How to Create Your Own Playlist Cover Art on Spotify

Accessing the new feature is simple and works on both iOS and Android devices. All users need is the Spotify mobile app, updated to the latest version. Here’s how it works:

  1. Open the Spotify app and select an existing playlist you created, or create a new one.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu on the playlist page and choose “Create cover art”.
  3. From here, you can upload your own photo or use Spotify’s tools to add creative elements like:
    • Text styles, colours, and effects using Spotify’s custom typeface, Spotify Mix.
    • Background colours and gradients for a vibrant touch.
    • Image masking and visual effects for a professional finish.
  4. Once you’re done, save the design, and your playlist will update with the new cover art. You can share it with friends or post it on social media directly.
