Sultan Condemns NYSC Camping During Ramadan

By Farouk Mohammed

The Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad-led Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has criticised the decision of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to continue with its orientation camp for corps members during the Ramadan fast.

In a statement by Dr Kalid Abubakar Aliyu, the Secretary General of the group, JNI also asked the Nigerian Army not to conduct its planned recruitment until after the fast had been concluded.

The group said Muslim faithfuls who are fasting during the Ramadan would be at a disadvantage if NYSC and the Nigeria Army go ahead with their various programmes.

”This is because the prospective corps members would be at disadvantage to their faith and other camp activities. The council also calls on the authority of the Nigerian Army to postpone the intended recruitment exercise until after Ramadan to avoid putting prospective candidates at a disadvantage,” JNI said.

The group also urged the NYSC to honour the agreement entered by the two parties for camp activities to be placed on hold during Ramadan.
