Tambuwal Withdraws from 2027 Sokoto South Senate Race

Abuja, Nigeria — Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal withdrew from the 2027 Sokoto South senatorial race on Friday, May 15, 2026, to support former Commissioner for Finance Faruk Malami-Yabo.

Okay News reports that the Sokoto State Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Lamir Aminu, confirmed the withdrawal following internal party consultations. The decision follows a period of internal disagreements regarding the selection of candidates for the 2027 general elections.

Aminu Tambuwal, who serves as the leader of the African Democratic Congress in Sokoto State, relinquished the ticket to maintain stability within the organization. The party leadership stated that the withdrawal is intended to facilitate the participation of younger politicians in elective positions.

“Senator Tambuwal decided to relinquish the ticket to promote harmony and strengthen internal democracy in the party,” Lamir Aminu said. He added that the ADC leadership in Sokoto is committed to giving younger politicians the opportunity to contest positions and that the move by their leader is a reflection of a party ideology of grooming young and vibrant leaders.

The African Democratic Congress has also allocated the majority of its tickets for Sokoto State seats in Nigeria‘s House of Representatives to younger candidates. This allocation forms part of a broader effort to increase youth involvement in the political process.
