Tension Rises in Lagos Assembly Amid Plot to Unseat Speaker Meranda

By Oluwadara Akingbohungbe

Reports suggest that allies of the embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, are strategizing to unseat the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, at any moment.

Sources revealed over the weekend that Obasa’s camp has been making renewed efforts to regain control after multiple unsuccessful attempts to remove Meranda since she assumed office on January 13, 2025.

The latest maneuver reportedly involves selecting a lawmaker from the western part of the state, preferably Ikeja, following the refusal of a candidate from Ifako-Ijaiye and others who have pledged unwavering loyalty to Meranda.

Some All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders sympathetic to Obasa are allegedly working to install a proxy Speaker from Ikeja.

The plan is for this individual to hold office briefly before stepping down to clear the path for Obasa’s return. Eventually, Obasa is expected to resign in favor of a widely accepted candidate.

Despite these ongoing political maneuvers, members of the state Assembly have once again reaffirmed their steadfast support for Meranda, showing no signs of backing down.
