Nigerian singer and songwriter The JLW has unveiled a new extended play titled Champion Mommy, a deeply personal project dedicated to celebrating and honouring his mother.
Okay News reports that the two-track EP, now available on all major streaming platforms, marks the third release in The JLW’s growing discography.
The project follows his debut EP My Father, which paid tribute to his late father, and Lagos Nights, the hit single off his forthcoming album Akadá The Album.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the new release, the artiste said the project was born out of gratitude and reflection.
“I decided to release this project to honor my mother and to express gratitude to her for the many ways she has shaped me into the man that I am today,” he said. “Now that I am older, I am more appreciative of the love that I experienced in my family, and the core values my mother taught and lives by, chief among which are the fear of God, integrity, obedience, and love.”
The opening track, Champion Mommy, centres on the bond between mother and son, with The JLW reflecting on the unwavering support, guidance and encouragement he has received over the years. In the song, he also acknowledges divine direction in his life, culminating in a poignant moment where he recites an excerpt from Psalm 91, blending faith with the theme of maternal protection.
The second track, The Grace, features Flora Fasan and shifts the focus to spiritual gratitude, highlighting God’s faithfulness throughout the artiste’s life journey. The song draws from his experiences chasing his dreams, a path that has kept him away from his home city of Lagos for more than a decade, while reinforcing the belief that divine grace is sufficient for all.
Reflecting on the values instilled in him while growing up, The JLW added, “My mum always said, ‘Train up a child in the way he should grow, and when he is old he will not depart from it.’ With this project, I hope she feels proud of the man that I am becoming.”
Dr. Kehinde Akinsulie, Vice President of Akadá and Chief Executive Officer of Akadá Music, described the EP as an authentic expression of the artiste’s personal life and faith.
“‘Champion Mommy’ coming just after ‘My Father’ EP is a testament to JLW’s approach to life in general as well as his art,” Akinsulie said. “His love for his mother is something any friend of his would share with him because she is such a rock. She’s unbelievably God-fearing and is one of the earliest examples we had of what it meant to follow Christ. She held it down at home and at work. She is indeed a champion to us all.”
Beyond being a personal homage, Champion Mommy also carries a broader message about honouring mothers and recognising the often unseen sacrifices they make. The project, produced by Akadá Music, seeks to resonate with parents, children and listeners worldwide by offering encouragement, perspective and inspiration to celebrate motherhood and its impact on society.
The EP is available now on all major streaming platforms.
