Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. His death marks the end of an era for the Ijebu people and Nigeria’s traditional institution, as he was one of the longest-reigning monarchs in the country’s history, having ruled for an unprecedented 65 years since ascending the throne in 1960.

Early Life and Rise to the Throne

Born on May 10, 1934, in Imupa, Ijebu-Ode, Oba Adetona hailed from the Anikinaiya Ruling House, a prestigious royal lineage in Ijebuland. Before his enthronement, he pursued education and professional training, including studying Accountancy in the United Kingdom, which was unusual for traditional rulers of his time. His return to Nigeria and ascension to the throne was officially approved by the Western Region Governor in Council on January 4, 1960.

Following his appointment, he underwent traditional rites and seclusion at Odo for three months, a customary preparation for the Awujale. On April 2, 1960, he was formally crowned at Itoro Square, Ijebu Ode, in a ceremony attended by prominent Nigerian leaders such as Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, signaling a new dawn for Ijebuland.

Oba Adetona’s reign was marked by longevity, sagacity, and a deep commitment to the welfare and unity of his people. His leadership spanned over six decades, during which he became a symbol of stability and cultural preservation for the Ijebu people and the Yoruba nation at large. He was known for his:

Political influence: Shortly after his coronation, he was appointed a member of the Western Region House of Chiefs and served as a Minister and Commissioner during the Western Region’s political crisis in the early 1960s.

Cultural stewardship: He upheld and promoted Ijebu traditions and customs, ensuring that the kingdom’s rich heritage was preserved and respected.

Peacekeeping: Under his rule, Ijebuland experienced no recorded inter or intra-ethnic conflicts, a testament to his effective governance and conflict resolution skills.

Advocacy for unity and progress: He was a vocal advocate for Nigerian unity and development, encouraging his people to excel wherever they found themselves.

His reign saw the Ijebu people gain prominence and respect across Nigeria and beyond. Oba Adetona was regarded as a philosopher and social scientist, whose wisdom extended into national affairs, making him a respected voice among Yoruba monarchs and Nigerian leaders.

Legacy and Character

Oba Adetona’s life embodied the seven barometers of existence in Ijebu mythology: longevity, relevance, success, family or royal value, affluence, spirituality, and character. Celebrated for his incorruptible nature, clarity of purpose, and undying love for his people, he was often described as a colossus in traditional leadership.

His 88th birthday in 2022 was widely celebrated as a testament to his enduring influence and vitality, highlighting his role not only as a monarch but as a custodian of culture and a statesman.

Death and Succession
The news of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona’s death was confirmed by palace sources and Ogun State government officials on July 13, 2025. He passed away peacefully at the age of 91, just hours after the announcement of the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a longtime friend.

Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain forthcoming, with official statements expected from the palace and government authorities. His passing leaves a significant void in Ijebuland and Nigeria’s traditional leadership, marking the end of a remarkable reign that shaped the socio-cultural and political landscape of the region.

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona’s life was a remarkable journey of dedication, wisdom, and leadership. From his ascension in 1960 to his death in 2025, he stood as a pillar of strength and unity for the Ijebu people. His legacy as the longest-serving Awujale and one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers will endure, inspiring future generations to uphold the values he championed throughout his life.
