BREAKING: Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Dies

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and until his death, remained one of the longest-reigning traditional rulers in the country’s history.

A revered custodian of culture and a respected voice in national matters, the late monarch ruled the Ijebu Kingdom in Ogun State for more than six decades.

His passing comes just hours after the death of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London after battling an undisclosed illness.

Oba Adetona was widely known for his boldness, wisdom, and principled stance on issues affecting both his people and the Nigerian nation.

A member of the House of Anikinaiya, his reign witnessed remarkable modernization within Ijebu communities and a strengthening of traditional institutions.

Though details surrounding his final moments remain private, his death marks the end of an era for the Ijebu Kingdom and Nigeria at large.

Okay.ng reports that tributes have already begun pouring in from across the country, with dignitaries expected to pay their respects in the coming days.
