President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday afternoon in London.

In an official condolence statement released Sunday evening, Tinubu said the nation would pay its final respects to the former leader with dignity and honour, starting with the lowering of all national flags to half-mast across the country from Sunday, July 14.

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” President Tinubu stated.

He further announced that an emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) session will be held on Tuesday, dedicated solely to celebrating the legacy and contributions of the late president.

“I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour. The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country,” Tinubu added.

Okay.ng reports that preparations are underway for a state funeral to be held in Buhari’s hometown of Daura, Katsina State, where he will be laid to rest.

President Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a military leader in the 1980s before returning as a two-term democratic president from 2015 to 2023, passed away at 4:30 pm in a London clinic.
